Post-Installation Instructions

Aline for Salesforce — Post-Installation Instructions

Audience: the Salesforce Administrator setting up the Aline managed package after installation.

This guide walks you through configuring the Aline package once it has been installed in your Salesforce org. Complete the sections in order. Steps marked (optional) can be skipped or deferred without affecting core functionality.

Overview

Aline for Salesforce lets your team launch Aline contract workflows directly from Opportunity records, then track and download the resulting documents and versions without leaving Salesforce.

After install, an administrator needs to:

  1. Assign the Aline Admin and Aline Standard User permission sets to the right users.
  2. Connect your Salesforce org to Aline, signed in as a System Administrator.
  3. Add the Launch Aline Workflow action and the Aline Workflow Explorer component to your Opportunity pages.
  4. Run a quick smoke test to confirm everything works end to end.

Prerequisites

  • Salesforce edition: Lightning Experience is required (all components are Lightning Web Components). Any edition that supports managed packages and custom objects (Professional with API access, Enterprise, Unlimited, or Developer) is suitable.
  • Administrator access: You need the System Administrator profile (or an equivalent profile with permission to assign permission sets, edit page layouts, and use Lightning App Builder).
  • A System Administrator login available for the connection step. Connecting your org to Aline has to be done from a Salesforce System Administrator account — see Step 3. Have those credentials to hand before you start.
  • A connection to Aline. Your Aline representative walks you through this once the package is installed. Everything the integration needs to authenticate itself is set up over that connection automatically — there is nothing for you to obtain, paste, or keep safe.

Installing the package

Install the package into a sandbox first, validate it, then repeat in production.

Production

  1. Log in to your production org as a System Administrator.

  2. Open the installation link:

    https://login.salesforce.com/packaging/installPackage.apexp?p0=04tam000006baQrAAI

  3. Choose Install for Admins Only (recommended — you will grant access via permission sets), then click Install.

  4. If prompted to approve third-party access for callouts to Aline, approve it.

  5. Wait for the confirmation email or on-screen success message before continuing to configuration.

Sandbox

  1. Log in to your sandbox as a System Administrator.

  2. Open the sandbox installation link:

    https://test.salesforce.com/packaging/installPackage.apexp?p0=04tam000006baQrAAI

  3. Follow the same steps as production above.

Links above install the current release, 0.6.0. For earlier versions, see What's Changed.

Tip: Because a package installed as a pre-release build cannot be upgraded in place, prefer installing a released version in any org you intend to keep and upgrade over time.

Post-install configuration

Step 1 — Assign permission sets

The package ships two permission sets. Every user who interacts with Aline needs at least one.

Permission setWho should receive it
Aline AdminAdministrators and integration owners. Grants full access to Aline records, the Aline Configuration page, and the Aline Error Log for troubleshooting.
Aline Standard UserSales reps and other end users who launch workflows and view/download Aline documents. (Does not include access to the Aline Error Log — that is admin-only by design.)

To assign a permission set:

  1. Go to Setup → Users → Permission Sets.
  2. Open Aline Admin (or Aline Standard User).
  3. Click Manage Assignments → Add Assignments.
  4. Select the users, then click Assign.

Repeat for each user. An administrator who also launches workflows can be assigned both sets.

Step 2 — Review the Aline Configuration page

There are no credentials for you to enter — Aline sets those up itself during Step 3. This page exists so you can confirm the connection landed and choose how launching behaves.

  1. Click the App Launcher (the grid icon, top-left), search for Aline Configuration, and open it. Only users with the Aline Admin permission set can open it, so assign yourself that set first (Step 1).
  2. Read the status banner at the top of the page and the Connection tab beneath it. Together they report whether Aline has finished setting your org up. Before Step 3 they will say it has not — that is expected at this point, and it should resolve on its own once you connect.
  3. On the Behavior tab, (optional) choose a Launch Mode:
    • Post (default) — data is sent to Aline and users see a success screen without leaving Salesforce.
    • Redirect — data is sent to Aline and the workflow opens in a new browser tab.
  4. Click Save Configuration if you changed anything. The fields on the Connection tab are filled in by Aline, not by you — leave them alone.

Base URL: The Aline Base URL defaults to the standard Aline endpoint and does not need to be changed in most installations, so the field is hidden. If your environment needs a different Base URL, contact your Aline representative — they can unlock it, after which the field appears on this page.

Step 3 — Connect your org to Aline

This is the step that links the two systems. Aline creates its integration app inside your Salesforce org during this login, and it needs administrator-level privileges to do so.

⚠️ Sign in with a System Administrator account

When Aline asks you to log in to Salesforce, use a System Administrator login. A standard user, a restricted profile, or an API-only integration user cannot complete this step — the connection will appear to fail for reasons that are not obvious from the error message.

This is a one-time requirement for establishing the connection. It does not change who can use Aline day to day; that is controlled by the permission sets in Step 1.

To connect:

  1. In Aline, start the Salesforce connection from your Aline account settings. Your Aline representative will point you at it.
  2. Choose the correct environment when prompted — Production or Sandbox. A sandbox org must be connected through the sandbox login, not the production one.
  3. Sign in with your System Administrator Salesforce credentials.
  4. Approve the access request when Salesforce shows it.
  5. Return to Aline Configuration in Salesforce (Step 2) and confirm the status banner and Connection tab now report the org as set up. If either still reports something missing after a few minutes, contact your Aline representative.

What if my organization requires a dedicated integration user? It is possible, but it is not the recommended setup and it cannot be done in one pass — see Using a dedicated integration user at the end of this guide. Connect with an administrator first; that path works and is the one we support.

Step 4 — (Optional) Feature flags

Most orgs need no feature-flag setup — the package works out of the box. Feature flags are optional per-org toggles that your Aline representative configures for you when a specific capability is needed (for example, unlocking the Base URL field, enabling verbose diagnostic logging during an investigation, or turning on the post-launch "generated documents" list on the launcher success screen).

If your Aline representative asks you to enable one, they will provide the exact steps. No feature-flag records ship with the package, and none are required for standard use.

Adding the "Launch Aline Workflow" quick action

The Launch Aline Workflow action is delivered for the Opportunity but must be added to your Opportunity page layout(s) so reps can see it.

  1. Go to Setup → Object Manager → Opportunity → Page Layouts.
  2. Open the layout your sales team uses (commonly Opportunity Layout).
  3. In the palette, click Mobile & Lightning Actions.
  4. Find Launch Aline Workflow and drag it into the Salesforce Mobile and Lightning Experience Actions section. Place it near the front of the action bar for visibility.
  5. Click Save.

Repeat for every Opportunity layout where the action should appear (for example, per record type). To confirm, open any Opportunity — the Launch Aline Workflow button should appear in the highlights action bar.

Adding the Aline Workflow Explorer to the Opportunity page

The Aline Workflow Explorer is a Lightning component that shows all Aline activity for an Opportunity — every Workflow, its Documents, and each Document's Versions — in a single expandable tree, with inline download buttons.

  1. Open any Opportunity record.
  2. Click the gear icon (top-right) → Edit Page to open Lightning App Builder.
  3. In the left palette, under Custom — Managed, find Aline Workflow Explorer.
  4. Drag it onto the page. The main content area is recommended — the component uses a tree grid and works best with horizontal space.
  5. (Optional) With the component selected, use the right-hand panel to choose which optional columns appear (Status, Doc Type, Version, Created, Link). The Name, Type, and Download columns are always shown.
  6. Click Save, then Activate and assign the page as the org default (or to the appropriate app/profile).

Also delivered on Account: The workflow launcher supports launching from Account records as well. If you want reps to launch from Accounts, you can add the equivalent Lightning components/actions to your Account pages using the same steps.

Native related lists (optional): If you prefer Salesforce related lists, you can add Aline Workflows and Aline Documents related lists to the Opportunity layout instead of (or in addition to) the Workflow Explorer. The Explorer shows the same data in a richer, hierarchical view, so this is optional.

Download actions are pre-configured: The Download Latest action on Aline Document records and the Download action on Aline Version records ship pre-added to their page layouts — no setup required. Downloads are also available as inline icons in the Workflow Explorer, which is usually the most convenient entry point.

Verifying the setup (smoke test)

Once the steps above are done, run a quick end-to-end check.

  1. Log in (or use a test user) with the Aline Standard User permission set.
  2. Open any Opportunity.
  3. Click Launch Aline Workflow in the action bar. The launcher modal should open and list the templates available from Aline.
    • If you see a "Configuration not found" message → complete the connection step (Post-install configuration, Step 3).
    • If you see a permissions message → confirm the permission set assignment (Step 1).
  4. Select a template. The launch form opens with its inputs grouped into collapsible sections — Required Fields, Optional Fields, Aline-only fields, and Signers — in a two-column layout. Confirm fields render and are editable.
    • If the template defines signers, each shows a Name and Email picker. Start typing and confirm members of your Aline org appear; picking one fills both fields. (Typing a new email by hand also works, for external signers.)
  5. Click Launch Workflow and confirm the launch completes and a success screen appears.
  6. Once Aline processes the workflow, confirm the new Workflow (and any Documents/Versions) appear in the Aline Workflow Explorer on the Opportunity, each with a working Download icon.

The Aline Error Log (for admins)

The package records a diagnostic entry to the Aline Error Log whenever a call to or from Aline fails — bad credentials, network errors, or errors returned by Aline. These records are visible only to users with the Aline Admin permission set.

To review them:

  1. Click the App Launcher → search for Aline Error Logs → open the tab.
  2. Browse recent entries. Each is organized into Summary, Endpoint, Error Details, Payloads, and System Information so you can triage without a developer.
  3. Use the Error Type and Log Level fields to filter (for example, ERROR entries are always captured; more verbose entries appear only when your Aline representative has enabled deeper logging for a specific investigation).

For privacy, request/response headers are never stored. Message bodies are captured (and truncated for very large payloads) to aid diagnosis.

Some organizations prefer integrations to run under a dedicated service account rather than a named administrator. Aline supports this, but it is not the setup we recommend, and it cannot be completed in a single pass.

Why it is awkward. Aline connects to Salesforce through a connected app. Approving a connected app that is not already installed in the org requires the Salesforce permission "Approve Uninstalled Connected Apps", and Salesforce's Minimum Access — API Only Integrations profile — the profile that comes with the Integration User license — cannot be granted that permission. So an integration user cannot approve the app on its own, and the connection fails at the very first handshake.

Our recommendation: connect with a System Administrator (Step 3) and leave it there. That path is straightforward, fully supported, and does not affect which of your users can launch workflows.

If you still want an integration user, the app has to be approved by an administrator first and the connection re-made afterwards. Do this with your Aline representative on the call rather than alone:

  1. Open an incognito / private browser window and sign in to the Aline platform.
  2. Start the Salesforce connection and sign in with a Salesforce System Administrator account. This approves and installs the connected app in your org.
  3. Back in Aline's Salesforce connection settings, click the gear icon → Disconnect.
  4. In Salesforce, go to Setup → Connected Apps → Connected Apps OAuth Usage and find the Apideck Unify connected app. Confirm its App Status is Allowed. If it is not, click Load Actions → Install.
  5. Run the Aline connection process again, this time signing in with your Salesforce integration user credentials.

The administrator sign-in in step 2 exists only to get the connected app approved. Once step 5 completes, day-to-day traffic runs as the integration user.

Before you start: the integration user still needs the Aline Admin permission set, API Enabled, and read access to Opportunity and Account. Your Aline representative can confirm the full list.
